MONA
About MONA
MONA, located on the Berriedale peninsula in Hobart, Tasmania, is Australia’s largest privately funded museum and home to an expansive collection of ancient, modern and contemporary art from the David Walsh Collection. Noted for its unique combination of themes surrounding sex and death – MONA has been described by the founder, Walsh, as a ‘subversive adult Disneyland’. As well as providing visitors with exhibitions all year round, it also holds two very popular annual music & arts festivals: Mona Foma & Dark Mofo, showcasing public artworks across large-scale live performances. The Museum opened officially back in 2011, ensuring there remains something extraordinary to explore at every visit!
Mona, Tasmania’s renowned museum crafted by David Walsh to make a statement of magnitude and sophistication, is like no other. It offers an unparalleled collection of cocktails and fine Australian modernism artworks combined with architectural brilliance – all while providing guests with the option to tie the knot or catch some killer live music! Mona continues to surprise visitors as there is always something new each visit; from delicious hot chippies in their kitchen garden restaurant for grubbers galore to perhaps even thinking of it as one giant elaborate marketing stunt set up by Mr Walsh himself…all we can say for sure is that this historic site certainly packs a punch!
What to do at MONA
The Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) is more than a gallery for Australian billionaire David Walsh’s impressive collection – it’s an experiment in challenging traditional approaches to art appreciation. Located on the banks of Tasmania’s Derwent River, Mona offers visitors a unique experience with its three levels of underground art galleries navigated using the custom-built O handheld technology that provides insights into each artwork displayed. Stepping inside this creative playground invites guests not only to enjoy stunning visual works but also to explore contemporary questions about what we need from our artistic experiences.
Mona offers something for everyone, boasting two wineries and a brewery alongside bars and restaurants, luxurious pavilions to rest your head in style, an inspiring library full of culture’s greatest stories as well as making time for the final curtain with its cemetery. And don’t forget about tennis!
